Amazon Gold Screening: From left to right: Sarah DuPont, Producer; Brian Nichols, U.S. Ambassador; and Mariano Castro, Environmental Vice-Minister of Peru
Noelia Gutierrez, USAID

A lot of expectation was created around the Amazon Gold documentary screening, which shows the cruel reality of the illegal mined gold in Madre de Dios, Peru.

The documentary was seen on December 2nd at the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP20) in two different venues: at noon for the general public at Vivero auditorium, and in the afternoon at Pentagonito for environmental leaders.

After the screening, Sarah DuPont, producer of the film and founder of the Amazon Aid Foundation; and Luis Fernandez, Director of the Carnegie Amazon Mercury Ecosystem Project (CAMEP), answered questions from the audience about this critical problem.

And this December 5th there is going to be another screening at the Miraflores Municipality: at 7p.m., in Reducto park.

About the film
Narrated by Academy Award winners Sissy Spacek and Herbie Hancock, Amazon Gold is the disturbing account of a clandestine journey into the Amazon rainforest. Ron Haviv and Donovan Webster, two war journalists led by a Peruvian biologist uncover the savage unraveling of pristine rainforest. They bear witness to the apocalyptic destruction in the pursuit of illegally mined gold with consequences on a global scale. An animated Agouti springs to life to tell the story of his ecosystem. Left in the wake of surreal images of once extraordinary beauty turned into hellish wasteland, Amazon Gold reaffirms the right of the rainforest to exist
as a repository of priceless biodiversity. You can see mores at http://amazongoldfilm.com/?page_id=49

COP20
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) entered into force in 1994, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The Conference of the Parties (COP) was designated as the supreme governing body of the Convention.

“Lima is a crucial moment to reach a climate agreement in 2015. Together with all actors, the Presidency of COP20-CMP10 will lead the process and take actions on the principles of transparency and inclusiveness to build trust and confidence”, said Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Minister of the Environment of Peru at the web site of the UNFCCC.
