USAID works closely with the Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Saida, Tripoli and Zahle, in addition to other local partners in north and south Lebanon and the Bekaa, to establish high-value fruit, vegetable and flower sectors. We are introducing new cost-effective, on-the-farm technologies, such as retrofitted greenhouses and new horticultural practices. This includes improving production and farm management systems and introducing market research and analysis, and technologies like hydroponics to allow safe non-soil vegetable production, reduce water misuse, and increase marketable production. Our work in this area shows that introducing new technology and education in all stages of production reduces costs, improves yields, increases demand and incomes, and improves quality and safety.
