Four grant agreements signed in last three months between USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, in partnership with Swedish Agency for International Development (SIDA) and four businesses, are expected to create new employment opportunities, many of which will be filled by women and youth. USAID is complementing companies’ own investment in expanding production facilities, upgrading technologies, and installing new production lines.

In December 2016, 16 Kosovo youth started internships in 16 USAID Advancing Kosovo Together (AKT) Prime partner municipalities. The internships followed a two-day training of 48 individuals organized by USAID AKT and Democracy Plus.

A one day-conference held in Pristina assessed the implementation of the Law on Languages in USAID partner municipalities. Representatives of civil society organizations from the municipalities of Gračanica/Graçanicë, Parteš/Partesh, Ranilug/Ranilluk, Pejë/Peć, Istog/Istok, Zvečan/Zveqan, Štrpce/Shtërpcë, as well as represenatives from the GoK Language Commisioners Office, summarized two years of work and successes in the field to promote the Law on the Use of Languages in these municipalities.

On January 19, the USAID Agriculture for Growth and Rural Opportunities program signed three grants to help establish associations that will provide agricultural support services in Kosovo. These strategically-focused efforts will increase the number of seasonal jobs to 3,000 and create 500 new full-time positions.

Several recent regional workshops held throughout Kosovo focused on the successes and challenges in inclusive vocational training in Kosovo.  The first in the series of these workshops held in Gjilan/Gnjilane was attended by 35 participants, including representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, Divisions for Vocational Training Centers (VTC), Divisions for Monitoring and Coordinating Employment Offices, the Ministry of Communities and Returns, the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce, Municipal Offices for Communities and Returns (MOCR’s), and private businesses from Gjilan/Gnjilane region.
