USAID Indonesia

Indonesia is the third largest democracy in the world, the largest economy in Southeast Asia and is home to some of the world’s richest biodiversity. Indonesia enjoys steady economic growth and has emerged as a regional leader; however, the country faces environmental and other development challenges.

This populous nation’s young democracy, emerging economy and strategic location make Indonesia an important partner to the United States.

Through targeted investment and by harnessing the power of science, technology and innovation, USAID works with the Government of Indonesia, local leaders, academia, the private sector, civil society and partners to address development challenges, from forging a just and accountable democracy to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable Indonesians.

DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS AND GOVERNANCE

USAID partners with the people and the Government of Indonesia to strengthen democratic governance. We collaborate on anti-corruption efforts, work to protect citizens’ rights and aim to ensure representational government. Our work in the justice sector has also improved public access to court decisions.

SUPPORTING THE POOREST AND MOST VULNERABLE

We collaborate with the Government of Indonesia to improve access to quality basic services. We help improve maternal and newborn care and provide access to water and sanitation facilities to approximately 2.5 million Indonesians living in urban areas. With USAID assistance, 780,000 students across the country benefit from improved quality in primary and secondary education. We also support vocational training and provide scholarship opportunities to Indonesian youth to earn advanced degrees in Indonesia and the United States.

ADDRESSING GLOBAL CHALLENGES

USAID partners with Indonesia to address development challenges of global consequence. We work to stem the spread of infectious diseases and support the Government of Indonesia's efforts to advance climate security and in building its resilience to extreme weather events and natural disasters. Through South-South and Triangular Cooperation, we train Indonesian agency partners in areas like disaster management.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION AND PARTNERSHIPS

USAID supports partnerships between American and Indonesian scientists, researchers and private companies to solve the world’s toughest problems. We helped establish the Indonesian Science Fund which is modeled after the National Science Foundation. The Fund serves as the nation’s first independent body to provide funding for scientific research.
