Democracy, Human Rights and Governance

Guinea swore in its first freely elected president in December 2010 and held elections for a new parliament on September 2013. To ensure more credible and accountable 2015 presidential and upcoming communal elections in the country, USAID launched Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS) activity with the purpose of reinforcing the capacity of Guinea’s Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). The activity also targets empowering civil society organizations and strengthening their capacity to conduct domestic election observation and monitoring. In addition, Search for Common Ground (SFCG) supported conflict mitigation activities and peaceful elections in Guinea by delivering key messages and accurate news reporting during presidential and local election processes to rebuild trust within communities and public health facilities. USAID is committed to accelerate post-Ebola recovery efforts for the next two years with a focus on strengthening civil engagement, health, finance and governance.

Global Health

USAID aims to strengthen the health system for improved service delivery in close partnership with government institutions, and civil society organizations to foster good governance, transparency and equity in the provision of health services. Guinea is also a priority President`s Malaria Initiative country, focused on critical efforts that reduce maternal mortality, increase child survival and prevent and treat infectious disease. USAID seeks to sustain its longstanding investments in the health sector, with on-going post Ebola recovery activities; health system and services strengthening and recently the implementation of the Global Health Security Agenda to prevent detect and respond to epidemics.

Food Security and Nutrition

We support an activity that strengthens the institutional base for developing Guinea’s human capacity in agriculture. The major focus of the project is to strengthen the Agricultural Institute of Faranah programs and their support in small and medium enterprise development. USAID has launched Feed the Future programs in both Guinea and Sierra Leone. The Feed the Future Initiative will assist the government of Guinea to reduce poverty and hunger through inclusive agriculture sector growth, improved nutritional practices and status, enhanced farmer productivity and enable an agribusiness environment for sector growth.
