USAID helps Guinea become food secure by supporting agricultural development programs.

At independence, Guinea was a food exporter, especially banana. Today, it imports an estimated third of the rice it consumes each year. The overall agricultural productivity is reduced by weak linkages between farmers and markets. This situation is characterized by limited access to reliable high quality seeds and fertilizer, lack of information on new agricultural technologies and best practices. USAID Feed the Future Initiative will assist the government of Guinea to reduce poverty and hunger through inclusive agriculture sector growth, improved nutritional practices and status, enhanced farmer productivity and enable an agribusiness environment that stimulates the agriculture sector growth.

Agriculture Education and Market Improvement Program (AEMIP)

USAID/Guinea’s (AEMIP) strengthens the capacity of agriculture education in Guinea to respond to the growing needs of farms and agriculture enterprises in the face of shifting markets and climate change. Through this program the Institut Supérieur Agronomique Valéry Giscard d’Estaing de Faranah (ISAV/F) in Guinea will be recognized as a leader in the region for training in climate-smart agriculture and for disseminating agricultural adaptive technology. AEMIP and Farmer to Farmer F2F leverage the skills and expertise of more than 40 short- and long-term volunteers from the U.S. to engage in technical assistance and training.

Feed The Future Guinea Agriculture Services (GAS)

The Government of the United States began a presidential program called "Feed the Future" as its support in the effort to eradicate hunger. Guinea is one of the countries benefitting from this program following the Ebola outbreak. The Guinea Agriculture Services was conceived from this initiative. The project was launched in November 2016 and will be implemented in the regions of Kindia, Mamou and Faranah over a period of five years (2016-2021).

The Guinea Agriculture Services (GAS) will integrate aspects of improving rural and agriculture based livelihoods as well as improving nutrition. Private sector partners are invited to leverage technical expertise, innovations, networks and financial resources leading to the advancement of Guinea`s agricultural sector.
