Georgia has made important achievements in health service delivery and health sector reform. Through USAID assistance, the country is currently on-track to meet several of the U.S. government’s Global Health Initiative goals, including a substantial and steady decline in infant and child mortality rates. Several important challenges remain, and USAID’s programs in the health sector continue to help Georgia improve maternal and child health, stop the spread of infectious diseases like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, and improve health service delivery through healthcare sector reforms.

The project will address the challenges of water supply and sanitation conditions in schools and health clinics in rural areas of the Adjara region in Georgia and improve water and sanitation conditions in these facilities by implementing a wide array of interventions, including rehabilitating/constructing toilet facilities; providing access to running water; improving access to safe drinking water; supporting community mobilization and local capacity development to assure operations and maintenance planning; providing school-based sanitation and hygiene training for school administrators, teachers, and students; and supporting public education campaigns on hygiene and sanitation.
