Representatives of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Counterpart International today marked the beginning of the Strengthening Women’s Political Participation project in Ganja. The project, which aims to strengthen participation of women in decision-making processes in Ganja as well as the regions of Samukh, Goygol and Dashkasan, is part of the Women’s Participation Program, funded by USAID and implemented by Counterpart International.
On April 11, 2012, “Uluchay” Social-Economic Innovation Center, USAID’s local partner implementing the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) in north-west Azerbaijan, organized training on Volunteer Recruitment in Sheki (186 miles from capital Baku). Ten young men and six young women from Sheki and the neighboring Zagatala district participated.
Nearly 60 stakeholders representing international organizations, local NGOs, Embassies and government entities gathered together to launch the Women’s Participation Program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The Women’s Participation Program seeks to improve the status of women in Azerbaijan by raising public awareness on issues that affect women and empowering more women to participate in decision making processes. Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) commemorates its 50th anniversary. USAID's history goes back to the Marshall Plan reconstruction of Europe after World War Two and the Truman Administration's Point Four Program. On September 4, 1961, the Congress passed the Foreign Assistance Act. The Act mandated the creation of an agency to administer economic assistance programs, and on November 3, 1961, President John F. Kennedy established USAID.
The Governments of the United States of America and Azerbaijan have worked closely over the past six years to improve health care services for the population of Azerbaijan. Continuing this partnership, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) recently launched a new two-year health project – Azerbaijan Strengthening Health Systems through Integrated Programs (AZ SHIP).
