SAATLI – Today, thanks to joint efforts between Azerbaijan and the United States, residents of the village of Garajalar in the district of Saatli celebrated the completed rehabilitation of a community road. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Ministry of Economy, the local Executive Committee, and municipal government representatives attended the event. USAID and the Government of Azerbaijan co-financed the project, which was managed by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI).

The renovated 600-meter road will improve living conditions for more than 1,200 people in the Garajalar community. The new road will provide easier access by residents to the town of Saatli, reduce time and transportation costs, increase school attendance, and improve emergency response time to the community.  

State Committee employees trained to effectively implement projects

Twenty five employees of the State Committee for Women, Children and Family Affairs of Azerbaijan were trained in strategic planning and project management. The training, from July 18 to 27, 2012 was conducted by the USAID-funded Women’s Participation Program implemented by Counterpart International, USA. The objective of the training was to build the capacity of the participants to plan and manage effectively development programs funded by the Government of Azerbaijan and various donors.

USAID and IREX hand over Community Information Centers

19 Community Information Centers were handed over to local partnersthrough memorandums signed with them today. These centers, located in Shirvan, Imishli, Sumgait, Guba, Gazakh, Shaki, Ganja, Zagatala, Ismailli, Mingachevir, Lenkaran, Tovuz, Terter, Barda, Ujar, Goychay, Masalli, Khachmaz and Shemkir, were set up by IREX under the USAID-funded Azerbaijan New Media Project and hosted by local NGO partners.

Communities are trained to be able to address their health issues

On June 27, 2012, Save the Children, a partner of USAID’s “Azerbaijan Strengthening Health Systems through Integrated Programs” (AZ SHIP) Project, organized a one-day training on community fundraising for 7 members of the Community Action Group in Yengiyan Village of Zagatala District. The leader of the local religious community and the head of the municipality of the neighboring village also participated in the event.

Women’s Participation Program

On June 28, 2012, the USAID funded "Women Leadership in Local Governance" project trained 15 women to incorporate new leadership skills in their respective work with  local government structures,  businesses and NGO communities in the  Yevlakh region. The deputy head of Yevlakh region Executive Power, USAID, local municipalities, community leaders, and women from local executive governmental structures, and local NGOs participated in the training and related presentation on the same day.

Twenty two young men and women from Guba and the neighboring Khachmaz district participated.

On April 25, 2012, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with British Petroleum and its partners opened a new milk collection facility in Saritepe village (Shamkir District). The new facility will allow dairy farmers in the Saritepe community to sell their milk to commercial processors, increasing income for local residents.

Launch Women’s Political Participation Project in Ganja

Representatives of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Counterpart International today marked the beginning of the Strengthening Women’s Political Participation project in Ganja. The project, which aims to strengthen participation of women in decision-making processes in Ganja as well as the regions of Samukh, Goygol and Dashkasan, is part of the Women’s Participation Program, funded by USAID and implemented by Counterpart International.

Ten young men and six young women from Sheki and the neighboring Zagatala district participated.
