SAATLI – Today, thanks to joint efforts between Azerbaijan and the United States, residents of the village of Garajalar in the district of Saatli celebrated the completed rehabilitation of a community road. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Ministry of Economy, the local Executive Committee, and municipal government representatives attended the event. USAID and the Government of Azerbaijan co-financed the project, which was managed by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI).

The renovated 600-meter road will improve living conditions for more than 1,200 people in the Garajalar community. The new road will provide easier access by residents to the town of Saatli, reduce time and transportation costs, increase school attendance, and improve emergency response time to the community.

The 2nd Aquaculture Conference is underway in Zagatala district of Azerbaijan from October 6-8, 2010.  The goal of the Conference, which is sponsored by the Economic Growth Program of the Baku Office of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is to help develop Azerbaijan’s aquaculture sector.

On September 23, 2010, a conference marking the closeout of the Azerbaijan Reproductive Health and Family Planning Project was held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Results from 6 years of work were presented and recommendations for continued efforts to sustain improvements in the quality of Reproductive Health and Family Planning were made. The conference gathered officials from the Government of Azerbaijan, representatives of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implementing partners, as well as health workers from Baku and the regions.

The Azerbaijan Reproductive Health & Family Planning (RH/FP) Project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by EngenderHealth in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU) and the Post-Graduate Training Institute hosted a presentation on the “Reproductive Health and Family Planning” manual on September 13, 2010.

A group of Azerbaijani women lawyers from the Women’s Bar Association (WBA) met with US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer on July 4th, 2010 as part of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to Azerbaijan. WBA’s current president as well as its founder, other board members, and USAID Azerbaijan staff attended the meeting.

The Barama Innovation Center, which was opened in Baku’s Old City in December 2009, has started to offer young Azerbaijani entrepreneurs the opportunity to develop their ICT and telecom-related innovations in a safe environment before launching them in the Azerbaijani marketplace. The main objective of the Barama project is to provide support aimed at exploring new ideas in the sphere of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), evolving them to maturity and eventually turning them into reality.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Azerbaijan Reproductive Health & Family Planning (RH/FP) Project will launch a social marketing promotion for private sector pharmacies as part of the ongoing National Pomegranate Campaign “Pregnancy Planning – Choose the Right Time!”. The goal is to increase public awareness about modern contraception as the safest and most reliable way to plan a healthy pregnancy and encourage pharmacies to offer consumers the widest possible choice of quality contraceptive products.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Microsoft Azerbaijan, forming an alliance aimed at reducing the use of pirated software and boosting innovation, sales, and jobs in Azerbaijan’s developing information technology sector.

“We are pleased to be able to support this partnership, and we look forward to the positive results that this public-private partnership is designed to produce,” states USAID/Caucasus-Azerbaijan Economic Growth Office Director Sheila Young.
