SABIRABAD – On October 2, residents of the Akhiskha community of Sabirabad rayon, representatives of the local ExCom and the municipality, officials from the Ministry of Economy and Industry (MEI), U.S. Embassy and the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) gathered to mark the successful completion of the renovation of a kindergarten.
BAKU - Ms. Mikaela Meredith assumed her position as the new Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Azerbaijan.
Prior to being named Mission Director, Ms. Meredith served in three senior leadership roles in Washington, DC. Her 25 year career with USAID included assignments in the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe.
Despite the fact that various types of gender-based discriminations are still happening in Azerbaijan, each year more Azerbaijani women feel self-confident and ambitious for taking leading positions and running for political seats. According to the Central Election Commission’s official statistics, municipal elections, held in December 2014 in Azerbaijan, resulted in an eight percent increase in women’s representation across the country – from twenty-seven percent in 2009 to thirty-five percent in 2014.
On July 23, 2015 residents of the Seyidler community of Samukh rayon, representatives of the local ExCom and the municipality, officials from the Ministry of Economy and Industry (MEI), U.S. Embassy and USAID representatives gathered to mark the successful completion of the community road rehabilitation project. The 370 meters of the community road was rehabilitated under the Socio-Economic Development Activity (SEDA) project in close cooperation with the local NGO, UMID, and co-financed by the governments of the United States and Azerbaijan.
On June 19, 2015 residents of the Gobektala community of Imishli rayon, representatives of the local ExCom and the municipality, officials from the Ministry of Economy and Industry (MEI), and USAID representatives gathered to mark the successful completion of the construction of a new medical facility. The facility was constructed under the Socio-Economic Development Activity (SEDA) project in close cooperation with the local NGO, UMID, and co-financed by the governments of the United States and Azerbaijan.
GAKH – On June 5, the USAID-supported Women’s Participation Program in partnership with the State Committee for Family, Women and Children’s Affairs of Azerbaijan organized a national conference dedicated to strengthening women’s participation in local self-governance.
GUBA – On May 19, residents of the Gam-Gam community of Guba rayon, representatives of the local ExCom and the municipality, officials from the Ministry of Economy and Industry (MEI), and U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Robert F. Cekuta, gathered to mark the successful completion of the construction of four crossings over the Jagajug River. These crossings were constructed under local NGO, UMID, and co-financed by the governments of the United States and Azerbaijan.
GANJA - Nearly 120 participants attended a conference to discuss the community development process in Azerbaijan, the progress, challenges, and lessons learned in community mobilizing process and in implementing community socio-economic development projects.
The efficient supply of potable water is one of the main preconditions for quality of life for every family and for the operation of businesses. In Azerbaijan, water is supplied both to household and commercial consumers by Azersu, the sole water supplier in Azerbaijan. The company has over one million customers, of which about 30,000 are businesses.
