SHKODRA, MARCH 17, 2010     Today, USAID donated over 80,000 tomato, pepper and cucumber seedlings to 52 greenhouse farmers who lost their crops during the floods that occurred in December and January in northern Albania.   The seedlings will supply an important source of income for farmers during the spring months.

Farmers from the communes of Bushat, Guri Zi, Ana Mali and Berdic, met with the U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Deborah Jones, who helped deliver the seedlings to famers.

TIRANA, MARCH 15, 2010     The Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) released today the results of the first ever 2008-09 Albanian Demographic and Health Survey (ADHS).

This survey collected data on demographic patterns, fertility, maternal and child health, HIV, nutrition, migration and the role of women in Albania.  According to the ADHS, disparities in health and nutrition status, access to health services and levels of knowledge of family planning, HIV/AIDS and STIs are identified as areas for improvement.

GRAMSH, MARCH 05, 2010     Dozens of citizens, civil society organizations, businesses and students, volunteered to join the City of Gramsh and USAID, in a city-wide clean-up effort to jump-start the city’s new service improvement action plan.

With the support of USAID’s Local Governance Program in Albania (LGPA), the Municipality of Gramsh has embarked on an effort to improve public services for the community, particularly in waste collection and disposal.

SHKODRA, MARCH 3, 2010 Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Albania donated over 130,000 tomato, pepper and cucumber seedlings to 43 greenhouse farmers who lost their crops during the devastating floods that occurred in Albania in November, December and January in northern Albania.  The seedlings will supply an important source of income for farmers during the spring months.

FIER, FEBRUARY 23, 2010     The Mayor of Fier, Mr. Baftjar Zaqaj, and USAID Officer, Stephen Herbaly, launched today a new computerized tax system for the municipality.  The system was developed through USAID’s Local Governance Program in Albania (LGPA) program.  It allows for more efficient and effective administration of tax collections and services that will lead to greater tax revenue for the city and improved services for citizens of Fier.
