Stephanie Funk Sworn In As Mission Director to Zimbabwe

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stephanie Funk was sworn in today as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director to Zimbabwe.  Funk assumes leadership over a portfolio of programs to strengthen health services, increase food security, support economic resilience, and promote democratic governance.

Funk began her career in Africa as Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana and has since dedicated her entire career to the continent. She most recently served as Deputy Mission Director at USAID’s mission in Malawi where her portfolio included programs that promote political and economic development, improve delivery of and access to health and education services and strengthen food security, among others.

Prior to serving as Deputy Mission Director in Malawi, Funk served as a Democracy and Governance Officer in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Malawi, Sudan and Zimbabwe.  Her service in these countries occurred during historic times including the transition from one party to multi-party rule in Malawi, the launch of vibrant democratic processes in Zimbabwe in the late 1990’s , and the run up to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and its implementation in Sudan.  In recognition of her significant contributions to the development of Djibouti, the President of Djibouti awarded her Djibouti’s second highest medal of honor – “Medaille de Chevailier dans L’Ordre National du 27 Juin 1977.”   

Funk graduated with honors from the University of Scranton with a dual degree in political science and history.  She holds a master’s degree in international affairs from Drew University and a master’s degree in national security strategy from the National Defense University/National War College.  Funk is the recipient of the USAID Administrator’s Implementation Award and several USAID Superior Honor and Meritorious Honor Awards.
