To promote reconciliation and reduce the potential for conflict, USAID encourages improved community relationships and supports continued economic growth. Some of these projects focus on reconciliation and peace building by increasing access to justice, encouraging young leaders to lead development in their communities, and improving livelihoods as another tool to reduce the potential for conflict and to promote peaceful resolutions.
Land scarcity remains a key driver of conflict in Rwanda, and thus is a particular focus for USAID. USAID trains community mediators to manage land disputes, educates women and other marginalized groups on land rights, and works with local institutions to improve their capacity to do independent research on land-related issues.
Especially in conflict-prone areas, USAID focuses on enabling the Rwandan people to identify and find solutions to their own problems, and to open channels of communication so these problems can be heard and acted on by the Government of Rwanda.
