In an effort to strengthen commercial and economic ties between Afghanistan and India through trade and investment, the Governments of India and Afghanistan, along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), opened the first “Passage to Prosperity: India-Afghanistan Trade and Investment Show”. The event brings together more than 200 representatives from Afghan companies and more than 800 Indian participants to forge new business connections and discuss potential investment opportunities.
Seventy-five young Afghan women graduated today from USAID Promote: Women in the Economy (WIE)’s Microfinance Institute Training (MFI) Program. Implemented by the Afghanistan Microfinance Association (AMA), the nine-month apprenticeship program equips young women with the technical and managerial skills needed to secure jobs in banking and microfinance by increasing enrollment of women in training programs the MFIs already give to their new employees.
A 10-megawatt solar power plant, the first of its capacity in Afghanistan, is now under construction near the city of Kandahar after a ceremonial groundbreaking event featuring government officials and representatives of the country's national utility Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) and the Indian company contracted to build and operate the site. The project was made possible by $10 million in incentive funds provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development to mitigate the risk to the contractor, Dynasty Oil & Gas, Ltd.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) works with the Ministry of Education to improve educational attainment in Afghanistan and provide educational services that generate measureable learning outcomes. Recently, USAID conducted a national Early Grade Reading Assessment. The results provide information for the Ministry of Education and the international donor community to support early grade reading reform. The assessment findings also serve as a starting point for the Afghan Children Read for the development of teaching and learning materials and for measuring its progress.
The main goal of SEA II is to improve the institutional capacity, operations, management, and programming of educational institutions and civil society organizations in Afghanistan that implement activities in line with the higher and basic education needs of Afghanistan. SEA II has three main components: (1) Programmatic Support to Targeted Organizations; (2) Capacity Building for Improved Sustainability to help build the long-term viability of selected organizations and institutions; and 3) Flexible Education Grants Program.
