Inspiration for a Change

Shazia Mehmood* and her husband are now role models in promoting awareness on family planning in Tehsil Thull, Jaccobabad district of Sindh, Pakistan. The couple talks confidently about their decision to limit their family size to three children and wait for two years before their next pregnancy.

“I am so happy that we have our own girl’s school now,” said Ayesha Farooq, a grade 4 student at the new school that was built in Fateh Jang City of Attock District, Punjab Province by the Tameer-e-Millat Foundation. Financing for the school was provided by the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund.

Nearly 450 schools in Battagram District in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province were damaged or completely destroyed by the devastating October 2005 earthquake. As winter approached, people from the remote Allai Valley descended from their mountain homes to the banks of the Indus River to seek shelter at the Mehra Relief Camp. With USAID’s help, 1,550 children attended one of the three schools at the camp, some of them for the first time.
