Overview

The Increased Political Competition and Accountability Program promotes greater citizen participation in political institutions and processes through a variety of distinct components. The overall program runs from April 2012 to September 2020 and has a total budget of $6,229,522. It is implemented by the consortium for elections and political processes strengthening (CEPPS) made up of three U.S. organizations: the National Democratic Institute (NDI); the International Republican Institute (IRI); and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

Objectives

Enable a better environment for free and fair elections.

  • Works closely with the State Election Commission (SEC) to review the process for compiling and maintaining voters list, making sure it is conducted in a clear, transparent and coordinated procedure, and all institutions are involved in the update.
  • Works with SEC to develop the best way to update the voters list and develop an effective voter outreach program, and strengthen the capacity of the SEC to update and maintain the voters list while helping to increase coordination between key institutions and support related legal reform
  • Supports the SEC to increase public trust and confidence in the voters list through a voter education campaign.

Expected Results/Impact

  • Strengthened capacity of the State Election Commission to maintain and update voter list.
  • Accurate voter lists realized.
