U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria W. Stuart Symington participated in an event to mark the national rollout of Solar Home Systems through a partnership between a global solar energy firm (Lumos) and a telecommunications giant (MTN) that will help bring electricity to some of the most remote corners of Nigeria.
During a three-day visit to Nigeria, ‘Power Africa’ Coordinator Andrew M. Herscowitz reaffirmed the longstanding commitment of the United States to improving power in Nigeria and observed that U.S. support was already “making a difference” in the troubled sector.
On January 31, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched two new agribusiness partnerships with Chi Farms and Niji Foods. The event highlighted USAID’s agricultural and private sector strategy using partnerships with government, local organizations and private industry to develop the Nigerian agriculture sector.
On December 19, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced $227.3 million in additional developmental assistance to support the five-year $2.3 billion agreement signed with the Nigerian Government in 2015. This brings the total provided under the agreement to $702 million.
Dr. Rick Niska representative to the Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Nigeria, handed over 4.5 million bed nets at the flag-off event to the Oyo state Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi. The bed nets valued at $13.5 million will be distributed through a mass campaign scheduled to take place tomorrow, within the thirty-three local government areas of the state. The United States Government also provided an additional $4.5 million to support the logistics of the campaign, including transportation of the bed nets, community mobilization, training, and household mobilization.
