Niamey, Niger – Today, the United States Embassy in Niamey celebrated World Literacy Day, visiting a functional literacy and numeracy training center in Kobadje, Tillaberi region.  The U.S. Ambassador to Niger, Eunice Reddick, spoke to some of the 30 participants in the literacy program there. 

“I am pleased to be with you this morning to demonstrate our commitment to helping the people of Niger, especially women who, like you, want to create a better future for their children, their families, and for themselves,” said Ambassador Reddick.  “Attending these literacy trainings will help you and other women like you to contribute to your communities. Women who can read, write, and count will earn more money in their business and will make better decisions in their households; decisions that will be beneficial for their children, husbands, their community, and for themselves.”

In line with the worldwide goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030, government officials from ECOWAS member states committed to providing comprehensive health services for key populations in West Africa. They finalized a declaration of their commitment at an April 10, 2015, meeting hosted by the Government of Senegal and organized by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the West Africa Health Organization.

Accra, Ghana – The U.S. Government, acting through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for AIDS Research, the Foundation for AIDS Research, and the National Institutes of Health, announces the release of a special issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (JAIDS) titled “HIV Risks and Vulnerabilities among Key Populations in West and Central Africa—Evidence to Inform HIV Prevention, Treatment, and Care.”

Dakar, Senegal – Groundswell International and a collaborative effort between Mercy Corps and PlaNet Finance were selected as two of 16 teams to advance in the Global Resilience Challenge by the Global Resilience Partnership, an initiative spearheaded by The Rockefeller Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The selected teams will work to produce transformative proposals for the Sahel to qualify for up to $1 million for implementation and continued innovation.

Abidjan – The third High-Level Forum on Water and Sanitation for All is taking place from November 21 to 23, 2013, in Abidjan, organized by the Pan-African Inter-governmental Agency Water and Sanitation for Africa in cooperation with the Government of Côte d'Ivoire. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is an official forum sponsor.  The theme of this year’s forum is to promote vibrant and effective cooperation to accelerate access to hygiene, sanitation and water for all in Africa.

Niamey, July 19, 2013 - The Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy Richard K. Bell represented the U.S. Government on Friday in an endorsement ceremony for the Government of Niger's new Programme Sectoriel  de l’Education et de la Formation. The Chargé d'Affaires joined a community of technical and financial partners of the Government of Niger, including heads of diplomatic missions, as well as non-governmental civil society actors working on education in Niger in endorsing the national program.
