OVERVIEW

USAID’s Textbook Printing and Distribution Project supports Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education (MoE) to expand access to and improve the quality of basic education for Afghanistan’s school-aged children. Through this project, USAID partners with the Afghan government to procure and distribute appropriate, MoE-approved textbooks in Pashto, Dari and English.

ACTIVITIES

  • Provide direct funding to the MoE to print and distribute Mathematics, Science, Art, Life skills, Handwriting, Geography and History school textbooks in Dari, Pashto and English languages for primary and lower secondary levels.
  • Support the MoE in establishing a solid mechanism to manage and monitor textbook procurement needs and distribution.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • In 2012-2014, in partnership with the Afghan MoE, the project procured, printed and distributed 47 million textbooks to grades 1-6 students in 34 provinces.
  • In partnership with other international donors, the project supported the MoE to procure a total of 2.2 million textbooks for lower secondary schools in December 2015 and started verification assessment in May 2016.
  • From April-July 2016, the project will assist the MoE to distribute 11 million textbooks to primary and secondary students in 24 provinces.
