Snapshot of Achievements

  • 51,539 beneficiaries graduated.
  • 37,580 (73%) of beneficiaries initiated new business or expanded the sales of goods and services.
  • 35,056 (68%) of beneficiaries improved their nutritional behavior.

Guleriya, 19 January 2017 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) marked the successful completion of its Business Literacy Program, which is part of the U.S. Government’s Feed the Future Initiative in Nepal. The three-year, $4 million project provided over 51,000 people in Nepal – over 90 percent of whom are women and many of whom come from disadvantaged communities – with training to help them earn income, access financial services, and improve their nutrition.

The U.S. Agency for International Development today shared the final results of its cutting-edge integrated health and nutrition program for Nepal. The five year, $57 Million “Suaahara” project (2011-2016), implemented by a consortium of organizations managed by Save the Children, benefitted more than 2.4 million Nepalis in 41 districts.  Over the life of the project, Suaahara steadily improved the nutrition and health practices of socially excluded and marginalized groups, particularly pregnant women and children under 2.

U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B. Teplitz and Minister for Health and Population Ram Janam Chaudhary jointly unveiled plans to rebuild a new, earthquake-safe Bahrabise Primary Health Care Center (PHCC), today. The $1.9 million joint collaboration is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and will be implemented by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), bringing together the Army Corps architectural and engineering know-how and USAID’s public health expertise. The project includes demolishing the existing buildings, reconstruction of the PHCC, and fully equipping it according to Ministry of Health standards.

Officials from the National Centre for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) distributed the 100 millionth condom that USAID-funded HIV projects – including the current Saath-Saath project – have cumulatively delivered in Nepal since 1993. Evidence shows that, globally, an estimated 50 million HIV infections have been averted through condom use since the 1980s.

The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), today announced three initiatives to support the Government of Nepal’s model of ownerdriven housing reconstruction following the April 25, 2015 earthquake. Building on previous investments, USAID programs will train an estimated 13,500 local construction professionals and educate more than 285,000 affected homeowners on building earthquake-resistant homes over the next five years.

The Government of Nepal, in partnership with the U.S. Government, will contribute to improving the reading skills of one million public primary students (grades 1 to 3) in16 districts of Nepal through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) new five-year, $53.8 million Early Grade Reading Program. Based on lessons learned from this program, an evidence-based early grade reading model will be scaled up nationally. In addition, an estimated $8 million through the government’s Redbook mechanism will directly support the Ministry of Education’s National Early Grade Reading Program.
