USAID LAUNCHES WATER REUSE PROJECT IN KARAK

For Immediate Release

Thursday, March 26, 2015

Al-lajjoun, karak (March 26) USAID and the Ministry of Environment announced today the Al-Lajjoun Water Reuse Pilot Project, marking joint efforts to improve water efficiency and agricultural development in the Karak Governorate.

The program will benefit more than 50 farmers in the Al-Lajjoun area by allowing them to irrigate fodder crops with treated water from the Lajjoun wastewater treatment plant. The project will also install a state-of-the-art irrigation network, featuring water pumps that operate on solar energy to minimize energy costs.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Al-Shakhshir remarked, “This project will make strategic use of scarce water resources, prevent environmental pollution, and improve the livelihood of local communities.

USAID Jordan Mission Director Beth Paige said, “What makes this project most exciting is it was requested by the people of Al-Lajjoun themselves. The way this project streamlines solutions for meeting Karak’s water, agricultural and energy demands will make it a regional model for managing natural resources in rural communities.”

The USAID Water Reuse and Environmental Conservation Project is funded by USAID and implemented by AECOM. The project addresses environmental conservation and water reuse issues through capacity building for the Ministry of Environment, pollution prevention for industries, and water reuse for enhancing community livelihood.
