Amman (August 17) – The Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector Activity (SHOPS) celebrated the project’s completion today at Al Hussein Cultural Center after five successful years expanding the availability, quality and use of family planning services. The event was attended by HE Dr. Sawsan Al Majali, Secretary General of the Higher Population Council, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Health and the public and private health sectors.

The ceremony reflected on the project’s numerous achievements, which include 1.4 million home counseling visits conducted through community health workers and funding the procurement of 20 clinics for the Jordan Association for Family Planning and Protection (JAFPP). SHOPS also provided funds to the Islamic Center Charity Society, the Hussein Labor Clinics, the Institute for Family Health, and JAFPP to renovate and purchase equipment for a total of 31 clinics

In the private sector, the project assisted the expansion of a nationwide network of private physicians and pharmacists to increase the availability of family planning services

“For over five decades, the United States has been a primary contributor to Jordan’s strategic goals in the health sector,” said USAID Deputy Mission Director Lewis Tatem. “This project has played a leading role in ensuring Jordanian families have access to quality family planning services in line with their religious and cultural values.

SHOPS is a USAID-funded initiative implemented by Abt Associates to support reproductive health and family planning services through partnership with the private and non-governmental sectors. As a major contributor to Jordan’s health sector, USAID remains committed to helping Jordan meet its strategic and development goals.
