On September 20, the U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iraq’s Ministry of Education, outlining a partnership to support Iraqi efforts to improve primary education, as called for under the U.S. – Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement. The MOU was signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Mohamed Ali Tameem, and the USAID Mission Director, Thomas Staal.
On July 18, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Office of the Prime Minister of Iraq outlining American support for Iraqi efforts to reduce regulatory obstacles in Iraq’s private sector, as outlined in the Strategic Framework Agreement. The MOU was signed by USAID Mission Director Alex Dickie and the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Prime Minster, Dr. Hamid Ahmed.
USAID's Youth Initiative, which forms part of the USAID-Tijara Provincial Economic Growth Program will mark its two-year anniversary in April 2012. Since the start of the program, loans valued at $3,625,100 have enabled 1,045 young entrepreneurs to build businesses that today employ 2,220 Iraqis. The pace of job creation is increasing, with more than 1,000 new jobs created during the last quarter of 2011 thanks to microfinance loans totaling $1.63 million. In a demonstration of their strong partnership and joint commitment to strengthening primary health care throughout Iraq, USAID's Primary Health Care Project in Iraq (USAID/PHCPI) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) held a three-day national workshop entitled “The Development of Primary Health Care is the Optimal Investment to Improve the Health Situation in Iraq” from January 21-23, 2012. The workshop was hosted under the patronage of and presided over by the Iraqi Minister of Health.
