Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) held an event to celebrate the successes of the Support for Economic Analysis Development in Indonesia (SEADI) project as the project reaches it completion. Since 2010, SEADI provided 30 successful grants for economic policy making and training to Indonesian government agencies and researchers.

“Although we close the SEADI project today, the impacts of our efforts will be felt across many sectors in Indonesia,” said USAID Indonesia Acting Mission Director Derrick S. Brown, “Our contributions will have a lasting effect especially in the government agencies and Indonesian firms, where SEADI promoted evidence based policy making.”

Beginning in 2010, the USAID SEADI project worked with government agencies, think tanks, research institutions, and individual researchers address challenges in public policy making to promote economic development and reduce poverty.  

The USAID SEADI project also provided 16 scholarships for students studying PhD and Master’s degrees in the United States. Those students will return and provide improved capacity for evidence-based policy making in Indonesia.

USAID SEADI’s technical support included regional trade policy, food security, financial inclusion, financial market supervision improvements, small and medium enterprise development, financial programming for medium-term planning, labor regulation, and poverty alleviation.

As an example, USAID SEADI helped BAPEPAM-LK to develop new accounting regulations that brought Indonesia’s accounting practices for companies listed on the stock exchange to be in line with international practice, thus improving access to foreign capital for Indonesian firms.
