HEPP launch

Egyptian and U.S. officials launched today the $57 million Higher Education Program (HEPP), a key component of the flagship $250 million Higher Education Initiative (HEI) that the two countries announced in April 2015. The U.S. government-funded program will award up to 15 partnership grants, each for three years, with at least half of the grant funding reserved for Egyptian institutions of higher learning.

Today the Egyptian Ministry of Health released the results of the Health Issues Survey component of the 2014 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The U.S. Embassy through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and the United Nations Population Fund, completed this survey to gain relevant data to support informed decision-making on Egypt’s key health concerns.

Through the U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative, the U.S. government welcomed the first group of 107 scholarship recipients participating in fee-based excellence programs at Mansoura, Ain Shams, Alexandria, Cairo, and Assiut universities. Over eight years, this program will provide scholarships to 380 exemplary students for study in fields that are critical for Egypt’s economic growth, such as engineering, information technology, and business administration.

The U.S. Embassy announced an investment of $45 million in two new programs that will promote small businesses in Egypt and train students to help them successfully compete for jobs. Provided through the Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the Ministry of International Cooperation, the new programs seek to fulfill the needs of thousands of entrepreneurs and vocational school students over a four-year period.
