The U.S.-Egypt Science and Technology Joint Board approved fifteen collaborative research projects in health, water, agriculture, technology, and energy totaling $4.5 million last week in Washington, D.C. The Joint Board also agreed to send ten young Egyptian scientists to the United States to conduct research in their areas of specialization.
“One of the greatest strengths of the program is that it promotes collaboration between Egyptian and American scientists to address development challenges,” said Dr. Mary C. Ott, USAID Assistant Administrator for the Middle East. “The person-to-person relationships established among scientists during this time have contributed to a global culture of critical thinking, respect, and cooperation.”
Cairo – The U.S. Embassy in Cairo is pleased to welcome a United States Congressional delegation to Egypt for meetings April 2 – 3. Led by Senator Lindsey Graham, delegation members plan to meet with President Sisi and Minister of Defense Sedky Sobhy to discuss shared interests related to security, stability, and the fight against terrorism.
The delegation is also visiting projects implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) which are designed to protect Egypt’s cultural heritage and support its economic development.
Alexandria – Alexandria students were recognized for excellence today during the award ceremony for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Alexandria. The award ceremony caps off a three-day event sponsored by Intel and the U.S. Government in conjunction with Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth, and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology.
“Through scientific research clubs or STEM education, each of the fair’s participants reached new heights in learning and each of the students has what it takes to be Egypt’s next generation of leaders and decision makers capable of designing solutions to the country’s greatest development challenges,” said John Winstead, Acting U.S. Consular General, Alexandria. “That’s why the American people are committed to investing in their education – and are proud to support this competition.”
Cairo – Partnering with the Government of Egypt and the private sector, the U.S. Agency for International Develoment (USAID) is helping upgrade technical and vocational education and training under a three-year project to promote job opportunities and sustainable economic development.
“This year marks the 10th anniversary since Egypt was declared free of polio,” said Dr. Anne Patterson, Deputy Mission Director for USAID in Egypt, as the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population launched the next round of Egypt’s National Polio Immunization Campaign. The United States Government was proud to have supported Egypt’s campaign, which successfully eliminated polio in 2006. In the last two years, the United States Government has contributed over $9 million to support the next phase of the campaign, which will keep Egypt polio-free.
