Sustainable Energy Coming to Kenya with $233 Million U.S. Investment

Yesterday, the Kipeto Wind Park, a project supported by U.S. President Barack Obama’s Power Africa initiative, signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Kenya Power to provide clean, sustainable energy to the people of Kenya. The 100-megawatt (MW), grid-connected power facility -- which will be constructed in Kajiado County with land leased from the Maasai community -- will be one of the first utility-scale wind projects to generate electricity in Kenya.

AGMARK attributes its project funding increase to AIIM Grant

When the Agricultural Market Development Trust (AGMARK) received a grant from USAID’s African Institution Innovation Mechanism (AIIM), they did not envision the ripple effect of increased funding from other donors that would follow. AGMARK has attributed this positive development to the standardization of its systems funded through the capacity building component of the grant, known as USAID AIIM-Assist. 
 
Millers Securing Loans for East African Farmers

Co-ops now able to access crop loans through millers
 
East African smallholder farmers must rely on savings from their low incomes to increase their farms’ yields. This is largely due to their lack of access to credit, which requires collateral and loan histories, requirements that are far removed from these farmers’ financial realities. Thus they are left at the mercy of friends and relatives to provide them with small loans.

The Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA) is a regional organization of 19 African Member States. The COMESA  mission is to “endeavor to achieve sustainable economic and social progress ... particularly in trade, customs and monetary affairs, transport, communication and information, technology, industry and energy, gender, agriculture, environment and natural resources.”

The East African Community (EAC), consisting of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, is a leading regional economic organization in sub- Saharan Africa, and has made great strides in recent years toward integration. The EAC has a combined population of more than 153 million and a GDP of $109 billion. USAID supports the EAC to improve the quality of life of the people of East Africa through increased competitiveness, value added production, enhanced food security, trade and investment.
