Central America Regional Clean Energy Initiative

With the rise in fossil fuels prices and the power demand, Central America must work to ensure the supply, quality and price stability of tariffs for electricity for the benefit of the population and productive sectors.

The Regional Clean Energy Initiative is a five-year technical assistance program to help create a more favorable investment climate that promotes the development and implementation of renewable energy projects while reducing overall energy consumption by means of sustainable energy efficient programs in Central America.
The initiative seeks to harmonize regional regulatory and trade policy to develop the Regional Electricity Market and improve the renewable energy enabling environmental. To do so, it will identify key regulatory, technical and policy barriers to develop an energy action plan and a Regional Electrical Market.
The capacity of national and regional government institutions will be strengthened to support renewable energy programs and projects. The activities will increase investment in small, medium and /or large-scale regional renewable generation and facilitate energy transactions.
USAID will support the implementation of energy efficiency standards, and the use of high efficiency equipment at national and regional levels. The initiative will also design and promote financial/fiscal incentives to increase investments in energy efficiency programs.
