KABUL, AFGHANISTAN- U.S Embassy Kabul Charge d'Affaires Maureen Quinn along with Deputy Minister of Education Mr. Ghaznavi visited a USAID-funded education program on Thursday, June 30 in Kabul's Kart-e-Now district.

 

This USAID-supported education program is being implemented in two phases – an emergency Back-to-School campaign that was developed after the fall of the Taliban, and an expanded program which includes support to the Government of Afghanistan in key areas. These include teacher training, accelerated learning for older students denied educational opportunities under the Taliban, printing textbooks, school construction, and higher education programs and literacy training for workforce development. 

 

The program was started as a probationary project in three provinces in 2002; it was then expanded to 14 additional provinces. It currently operates in 17 provinces. Nationwide, there are 170,000 students and 6,800 teachers participating in this activity. In each province, there are 10,000 students and 400 teachers enrolled in the program.
