One of the primary objectives of USAID’s Indonesia Urban Water Supply and Hygiene program (IUWASH) is to increase access to improved water for 2 million people (or 400,000 households). To reach this goal, IUWASH has been providing direct support to 51 local water utilities (PDAMs). The program is strengthening the internal technical, financial, customer relations and institutional PDAM operations, and facilitating external improvements.
In just over two years, IUWASH has successfully developed business plans needed to attract national level funding for the local utilities; reduced the number of people not paying their water bills or illegally accessing water pipes, called “non-revenue water;” replaced key pumping systems; and overall improved energy efficiency.
