USAID project connects a remote community with the Afghan government

Kura-e-Mabain is a remote village located in Shahr-e-Buzurg District of Badakhshan Province. The local middle school in the village is a state-run institution that did not have any furniture. Approximately 450 boys and 300 girls from four local villages attend the school. With funding from USAID, the community implemented a school furniture procurement project in cooperation with the Provincial Line Department of Education.
The community procured tables, bookshelves, carpets, chairs, desks, and chalkboards for the students and teachers. The project was an effective stabilization tool because it provided an opportunity to overcome and combat the influence of the insurgents, whose attitude toward education, particularly in relation to the education of girls, is often at odds with that of the local population.
USAID facilitates partnerships between community-based organizations, traditional leadership, and the Afghan government to identify sources of instability and address community grievances through small-scale community level projects in 14 provinces
