WASHINGTON, March 22 -- World Water Day reminds us that a sustainable and safe supply of water is necessary to the development and security of every nation. Nearly one billion people in the developing world lack access to an improved water supply. Without significant improvements in water and sanitation access and hygiene practices, global goals related to child mortality, primary education, disease reduction, environmental sustainability and poverty reduction will not be achieved.

In his inaugural address, President Obama pledged to help the developing world address its water challenges. At USAID, we are working hard to continue our longstanding support for improved water supply, sanitation, and hygiene, and to commit equal attention to ensuring the sustainability of this precious resource. These water investments are evidence-based and carefully targeted to make the best use of the hard-earned resources provided by the American people.
