Washington, D.C. – On October 29, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Chief Strategy Officer Carla Koppell will participate in a symposium titled Men, Peace and Security: Agents of Change, co-hosted by the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), The World Bank, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Women in International Security, and Sonke Gender Justice.  The conference will be held at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. and webcast via the Institute’s webpage: http://www.usip.org/webcasts

The purpose of the symposium is to better understand how the ascribed norms of men and masculine identities contribute to, and may even help mitigate, violent conflict and post-conflict. It builds upon and complements the U.N.’s Women, Peace, and Security agenda, especially as seen through Security Council Resolution 1325. In addition, the discussion at the symposium is intended to develop a “community of practice” and will apply a gender lens to broader issues of peace and human security.

Carla Koppell will serve on the panel, Looking Forward: Policy Responses for the Peace and Security Agenda, with Fredrik Arthur, Norwegian Foreign Ministry, Norway, Maria Correia, The World Bank, United States, Brooke Darby, U. S. Department of State, Joseph Hoenen, 1st German-Netherlands NATO Corps, The Netherlands, and Jose Luiz Ratton Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil.  The panel will be moderated by Chantal de Jonge Oudraat, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, North America, and Kathleen Kuehnast, U.S. Institute of Peace.

The event will consist of a two-day symposium (October 28-29) followed by an optional one-day training course, bringing together scholars, policymakers, practitioners and military and security personnel from around the world.
