WASHINGTON, DC - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah will travel to New York from September 22 to 26 to participate in the 68th United Nations General Assembly. Administrator Shah will lead the USAID Delegation at the UN and participate in high level events and meetings with leaders from foreign governments, NGOs, the business community, and the media. USAID will co-host the following events at United Nations General Assembly.
On Monday, September 23 Administrator Shah will participate in the event “Investing in Africa and Beyond” presented by JPMorgan Chase. Administrator Shah will speak in a panel discussion moderated by Matthew Bishop, from The Economist, with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Nigerian Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The event will also feature a conversation with Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates and Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase Jamie Dimon. Administrator Shah will discuss how developing countries can harness the private sector as an engine for economic growth and a means to combat extreme poverty.
On Tuesday, September 24 Administrator Shah and UK Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening will host “MDG Countdown 2013: Girls and Women Transforming Societies.” The event will explain how empowering girls and women can accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. Nicholas Kristof from The New York Times will moderate a discussion with special remarks from Special Envoy for Women and Girls Geena Davis, Nigerian Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
