WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah will be recognized for his leadership in foreign policy at the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) 2014 Tribute Dinner. Foreign policy and international development leaders from the U.S. Government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector join USGLC's tribute to Administrator Shah's accomplishments, below:
Bill Gates, Co-Chair of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation:
"The mission to end extreme poverty in our lifetime is an enormous challenge and one that cannot be accomplished without results-driven leaders like Raj. Because of leaders like Raj, a much wider constituency sees that ending extreme poverty isn't just the right thing to do for humanity; it's the right thing to do for our economy and our national security."
Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group:
"Raj Shah is one of the brightest and most innovative practitioners in the world when it comes to improving the lives of the poor in developing countries. Because of Raj's dedication and commitment, more mothers will survive childbirth, more children will live beyond their 5th birthdays, farmers' crops will be more bountiful, and more girls and boys will be going to school. He has shown all of us the power of development to improve millions of lives."
Congressman Ed Royce, U.S. Representative (R-CA):
"From food aid reform to Feed the Future, Raj Shah has worked tirelessly with Congress to advance common sense solutions to today's most difficult humanitarian and development challenges."
Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever:
"Raj Shah richly deserves this recognition from the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition for the transformational leadership he has brought to USAID and the development community. It has been a privilege to work with Raj on important development initiatives and to see first-hand his passion and his vision for a new model of development focused on partnerships, innovation and local leadership, which are greatly needed to solve our most challenging problems from extreme poverty to hunger to childhood disease. Thanks to Raj's leadership, governments, businesses and civil society are increasingly working together to leverage resources and scale up innovative solutions."
Senator Lindsey Graham, U.S. Senate (R-SC):
"Administrator Shah is a smart coalition builder who has brought a long overdue, transparent and business-like approach to USAID. I genuinely appreciate his efforts to partner with faith-based NGOs in delivering services to the developing world. Under Administrator Shah's leadership, USAID grows stronger and more effective by the day."
Strive Masiyiwa, Executive Chairman and Founder of the Econet Wireless Group:
"Raj has been a transformational leader at USAID. The rapid and effective response that the Agency led against Ebola to contain the disease is a case in point. By pioneering innovative development partnerships, like Feed the Future, he has transformed the way we approach agriculture, from poverty to one promoting shared prosperity. Through Raj's leadership millions of farming families, thousands of miles away in Africa, yield better harvests and lead healthy, productive lives. While most of them may have never heard the name Raj Shah, he is the greatest friend of Africa's farmers today."
Congresswoman Nita Lowey, U.S. Representative (D-NY):
"USAID remains on the front lines helping reduce poverty, hunger, and disease worldwide while making targeted investments in democracy, education, and health. The strength of USAID is, and always has been, its dedicated public servants from the top down. Administrator Shah's tireless work and steadfast devotion to USAID's mission has benefited millions of people and communities throughout the world."
Peter Sands, Group CEO of Standard Chartered PLC:
"Raj has been consistently bold, imaginative and determined - willing to try new things, willing to take risks and always focused on getting the best outcome. As a result of his leadership, we see USAID as a really effective partner in promoting social, economic and infrastructure development in the many less developed countries in which we operate. It has been a privilege working with him."
Senator John Boozman, U.S. Senator (R-AR):
"The United States has the tools to be a leader in global development and Raj Shah is leading the charge to continue our commitment. Raj is a champion of public-private partnerships and bringing the talents of American businesses, NGOs, universities and foundations to the table to develop methods to improve the world for all people, no matter where they live. Under his leadership, USAID has been modernized to meet the 21st century challenges while continuing to promote our ideals worldwide."
Rev. David Beckmann, President, Bread for the World:
"I thank God for Raj Shah's outstanding leadership. USAID's increased effectiveness is making a difference in the lives of millions of people, and it has set the stage for bipartisan collaboration in the U.S. Congress on international development issues."
Gregory Page, Executive Chairman, Cargill:
"I believe Raj Shah has made an enormous contribution to align the U.S. business community with the goals and intent of USAID. He has convinced many of us of the virtue of collaborative and innovative ways. The energy he has brought to USAID during his tenure is evident to many of us."
Dr. Paul Farmer, Co-Founder of Partners in Health:
"Seldom have the skills of a physician been applied at the level of nation, region, globe. Raj's first days on the job were defined by Haiti's earthquake, and less than five years later, the first pandemic of Ebola. In between these dramatic events, Raj and his team have sought to promote the health and wellbeing of the world's vulnerable children, and their mothers and families, in a manner that would make the 19th century paragons of social medicine proud. His contemporary medical colleagues have every reason to be so."
James Stavridis; Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret); Dean, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy:
"Raj Shah is the globe's top innovator in the development space. His tireless work for over half a decade has been noteworthy for its striking impact - from the dusty plains and high mountain passes of Afghanistan to the flood plains and earthquake damaged cities of Haiti, he has brilliantly led US AID in bringing hope and relief to millions."
Congressman Jim McGovern, U.S. Representative (D-MA):
"There is no greater advocate for human dignity than Raj Shah. Our standing in the world community is significantly better thanks to his efforts. He sets the standard for U.S. development priorities on global health, food security and nutrition - now and in the future. I'm privileged to work with him on these and many other development issues."
James Borel, Executive Vice President, DuPont:
"Under Dr. Shah's leadership, USAID is delivering encouraging results in the fight to end extreme poverty and to promote sustainable development. He is enabling needed collaboration among local governments, NGOs and private companies. And his vision of deploying scientific innovations to help solve some of the greatest challenges facing our global community is commendable."
Senator Chris Coons, U.S. Senator (D-DE):
"Raj Shah is someone I am fortunate to call a friend. He combines a keen intellect and tireless work ethic with a deep passion for tackling injustice, poverty, and inequities in the developing world. His values are rooted in a strong spiritual foundation and a commitment to caring for others. Raj has done tremendous, innovative work, and America is lucky to have him leading our nation's international development efforts."
Ken Powell, Chairman and CEO of General Mills:
"Dr. Shah is a visionary, who has shown passion and ingenuity in bringing together the public and private sectors to address some of the world's greatest challenges. His support has helped Partners in Food Solutions, a nonprofit founded by General Mills, strengthen the capacity of food companies in Africa. Since forming our partnership together, we've been able to work with more than 600 small and growing food companies, improving the whole food value chain, and creating demand for the output of hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers across Africa. We look forward to further partnering with Dr. Shah on our shared commitment to reduce hunger and ensure a stable food supply for our world's growing population."
Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, U.S. Representative (R-NE):
"Several years ago I met Raj Shah to discuss how we might leverage U.S. agricultural capacities to help struggling communities around the world provide for themselves. I have seen the tangible difference he is making in the lives of people who aspire to live in dignity despite structural poverty and despairing circumstances. Raj is an exceptional humanitarian and I am proud to call him a friend."
Susan Reichle, Counselor to USAID, Senior Foreign Service Officer:
"Raj Shah came to USAID five years ago and built a reform movement, USAID Forward, based on the priorities shared by the career staff and their desire to rebuild USAID into the world's lead development agency. From restoring USAID's policy and budget capacities to opening up the Agency to partner locally, Raj Shah is a transformative leader who serves the world's poor with passion and conviction."
Dr. Helene D. Gayle, President and CEO of CARE:
"Raj Shah has brought the combination of passion, energy and creative vision to USAID's work to have a sustainable impact on the lives of the the world's most vulnerable populations. His leadership has meant so much to us at CARE, and we value our strong partnership."
Sam Worthington, President & CEO of InterAction:
"Raj has led the transformation of USAID into a 21st century development cooperation agency. His vision to leverage partnerships and innovation, to advance local and breakthrough solution, and to scale results has fundamentally changed the agency. Thanks to Raj's leadership the America people can be proud of USAID's global role as it strives to eliminate global poverty and advance to potential of the world's most vulnerable societies."
Anthony Lake, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund
"I am delighted that the USGLC is honoring Raj Shah - a valued colleague and personal friend - at this year's tribute dinner. I wish I could be there. Whether in helping create and lead the Call to Action conference and A Promise Renewed movement for cutting under-five child mortality rates... or in the many innovations he has urged in both our thinking and our practices... or in his steadfast support in responding to emergencies... Raj is a leader. And a fearless one. Who else would speak passionately about the importance of toilets globally at his first meeting in the Situation Room at the start of a new Administration?"
