WASHINGTON, D.C. - On behalf of USAID, our deepest condolences go out to the family of American aid worker Dr. Warren Weinstein who was killed in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan while being held hostage by al-Qa'ida.

When he was taken hostage, Dr. Weinstein was working for J.E. Austin Associates on a USAID program to improve the lives of the Pakistani people. He dedicated his career to helping poor people around the world, including with the Peace Corps and USAID. Many of our staff remember him well, and we feel a deep loss at this tragic time.

Weinstein is survived by his wife and two daughters.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
