The USAID Dairy Project has spurred growth in Pakistan's rural economy by helping women farmers increase their incomes and improve their livelihoods. Realizing the pivotal role rural women play in Pakistan's livestock sector, USAID is creating a pool of up to 5,000 locally-trained and readily-available female livestock extension workers to provide veterinary services and advice on the care and feeding of cattle to rural dairy farmers. The project also meets farmers' basic needs by providing them with quality supplies for their animals, such as feed, vitamins, and medication.

Pakistan- Education- Scholarships

The United States celebrated the continued success of programs to educate the teachers of Pakistan today in a ceremony in Gilgit.  The United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), awarded 115 scholarships for future educators who will study in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, including at Karakoram International University, the College of Education, and the Elementary College of Education (Women).

Islamabad, April 19, 2013– Peach and potato farmers in Swat will be able to increase their incomes, improve their access to markets, and fight crop diseases more effectively thanks to a new USAID-funded program conducted in partnership with the Khyber Pakhtunhwa (KP) government and Telenor Pakistan.  The program will use Telenor’s mobile network to send farmers SMS messages and interactive voice recordings that provide customized information on crop prices, market access, and disease prevention.

At the 2nd annual Dawn Agriculture Expo, U.S. Ambassador Richard Olson emphasized the private sector's crucial role in expanding Pakistan's agricultural markets. He also celebrated more than 50 years of U.S.-Pakistan cooperation in the agriculture sector - a partnership that contributed to the Green Revolution of the 1950s and more recently has increased incomes for 800,000 families over the last three years.
