Over the past four decades, the American people, through USAID, have been partnering with the people of the Middle East to help young men and women gain marketable skills in areas such as technology, business, healthcare, agriculture and education.

THE CHALLENGE

Unemployment is a major problem for young people throughout the Middle East region.

Rates of unemployment of 15-24 year olds:

Egypt 27% male unemployment 59% female unemployment
Jordan 37% male unemployment 41% female unemployment
Lebanon 20% male unemployment 18% female unemployment
Morocco 20% male unemployment 25% female unemployment
West Bank and Gaza 28% male unemployment 57% female unemployment

EDUCATION

Lebanon
Provided full scholarships to 600+ students.

Jordan
Built or expanded 120+ schools and renovated 500 kindergarten classrooms.

Egypt
Trained 80,000 teachers on reading comprehension, that impacted 4.5 million 1-3 grade students.

West Bank and Gaza
Built or renovated 5,500+ classrooms, benefitting 500,000+ students. Added 375 computer and science labs, as well as 290 libraries in girl’s schools.

Morocco
Spent $17+ million in training 37K+ education professionals.

TRAINING & SKILLS

Egypt
Facilitated 29K internships for agriculture students, created over 15K agriculture jobs.

Lebanon
Provided job training, business development and microfinance lending to 15K+ women.

Morocco
Improved the lives of 12K+ at-risk youth with skills training, academic support, extracurricular activities and community engagement.

Jordan
Provided 20K+ hours of training in a variety of sectors including tourism, energy, and workforce development.

West Bank and Gaza
Reached 347,048 youths through 300+ youth centers and provided training to 30K+ youth.

 

INNOVATION & INVESTMENT

Lebanon
Provided ~15K loans to microenterprises and individuals, creating 3K new jobs.

Egypt
Created short-term employment during the post-2011 tourism downturn for 1,000 workers to preserve three historical sites in Luxor.

Morocco
Supported 5,737 first graders to participate in the experimental phase of the new reading approach in 90 schools.

West Bank and Gaza
Created more than 4K temporary jobs for some 470K days of employment.

Jordan
Facilitated $72+ million in loans to 316+ small and medium-sized enterprises.
