Strategic Provincial Road-Southern and Eastern Afghanistan (SPR-SEA)

DATES: November 2007 - December 2011
PARTNERS: International Relief and Development, Inc. (IRD)

The Strategic Provincial Roads in South and East Afghanistan (SPR-SEA) project rehabilitates provincial roads in Ghazni, Khost, Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Paktika, and Paktya provinces in the east, and Hilmand, Kandahar, and Uruzgan provinces in the south of Afghanistan. USAID rehabilitates provincial roads to an all-weather engineered non-asphalt standard. USAID also conducts community outreach activities and capacity building to demonstrate that roads bring positive change and development. Through road construction and community outreach, this project aims to improve stability and security in southern and eastern Afghanistan; facilitate efficient movement of goods and people; increase access to government and social services; decrease ethnic divisions between regions; facilitate development of the agriculture sector; increase local capacity for sustainable road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance; and provide employment opportunities for the people of Afghanistan.
