Afghan Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation (SWSS)

DATES: September 2009 - September 2012
PARTNERS: Association For Rural Development, Inc. (ARD)

Only 12 percent of Afghans living in rural areas have access to clean drinking water. USAID is building the capacity of the Afghan government and local communities to provide potable water and sanitation facilities and to improve hygiene behavior. The Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation (SWSS) project supports national and local government agencies, provincial reconstruction teams, and other stakeholders to design, install, and operate sustainable potable water systems, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs. These demand-driven activities will focus primarily on rural areas, but include urban and peri-urban areas as well. SWSS began in October 2009, and will be implemented nation-wide, with a focus on the east and south.
