"If they didn't teach me to care for my child, my child could die," said Mama Sophie, a mother in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who learned to keep her premature baby warm and close using the Kangaroo Care method. Over the last five years, the USAID-funded Integrated Health Project in the DRC has worked to improve the basic health conditions of the Congolese people. Women's and children's health are among the project's priorities. "Our most important success is that we have succeeded in stopping the deaths of 109,000 children, which is to say 25 percent of the objective of the DRC government in the last three years," said Dr. Diana Putman, mission director of USAID/DRC.
