"It is an honor and a pleasure to meet with Foreign Minister Youssouf and other ministers today. I am here to build on last month’s important meeting between President Obama and President Guelleh, and to deepen the partnership between USAID and the Government of Djibouti. As a result of our work together, Djibouti has witnessed extraordinary gains. In the past decade alone, we’ve seen Djibouti’s maternal mortality cut by half, and its primary school enrollment jump by 25 percent.

"In support of our shared priorities, USAID will be investing in programs to support the development of Djibouti’s labor force and energy sector. Working hand-in-hand with the Government of Djibouti, these targeted investments will unlock opportunity, reduce extreme poverty, and promote innovation.

"Through job training programs—including technical training for job seekers and management education for employers—we will help to empower Djibouti’s workforce to compete in the global marketplace. At the same time, we will work to catalyze investment in renewable energy projects that can light up thousands of homes and businesses across the country. By collaborating with local partners, we will not only tailor these investments to areas of need, but will promote sustainable development for generations to come.

"Our Agency looks forward to our continued work together, and to helping Djibouti shape a more prosperous and inclusive future. Thank you."
