Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel hosts ministerial with focus on enhancing the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts in Asia

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On April 2, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah, at the request of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, will help to kick-off the first-ever U.S.-hosted meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) defense ministers in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ten defense ministers from the ASEAN nations will be in attendance. Officials from the Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will also participate.
During the two-day ministerial, Secretary Hagel and Dr. Shah will address the U.S. government’s holistic approach to anticipating extreme weather events and ongoing efforts to respond more efficiently and effectively to climate-related emergencies. Dr. Shah will moderate a panel discussion with Secretary Hagel, the 10 ASEAN defense ministers, and experts from non-governmental organizations on the topic of disaster preparedness and relief.
