Statement by USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah:

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Peace Corps, an inspiring agency that has brought peace and friendship to communities around the world. Since its creation, over 200,000 Americans have made the commitment to dedicate part of their lives and work in 139 total countries. Their service and work has impacted countless people and has inspired communities across four continents.

USAID is fortunate to be staffed by hundreds of returning Peace Corps Volunteers who are continuing careers in international development. Our agency benefits every day from their first-hand experience and vital insight into development. We value their service and their experience, and recognize the commitment they have made towards advancing critical humanitarian and development work.

USAID will also be celebrating its 50th Anniversary later this year. Our two agencies share similar beginnings and a long history of transforming lives. We are proud to work alongside you as we create opportunities for people to build better futures for themselves.

The Peace Corps' accomplishments over the past 50 years have truly been remarkable. I commend the hard work of the agency and its volunteers who work tirelessly every day to assist communities around the world.
