WASHINGTON, D.C. – USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah met with Haitian President René Préval yesterday. Administrator Shah visited Haiti to meet with local officials and to monitor ongoing earthquake recovery. Administrator Shah and President Préval discussed recovery efforts and Haiti’s urgent needs. Administrator Shah traveled together with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate.
USAID Administrator Shah attends funeral of Archbishop Miot
USAID Administrator Shah and FEMA Administrator Fugate attended the funeral of Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, who was killed in the January 12 earthquake. Haitian President Préval attended, as did Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York. The funeral was held outside of the cathedral, which was badly damaged during the earthquake.
USAID Administrator Shah visits Hotel Montana site
Administrators Shah and Fugate visited the site of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince. Search and rescue teams have been working there around the clock after the hotel collapsed during the earthquake, trapping hundreds of people in the rubble.
USAID Administrator Shah visits hospital
Administrators Shah and Fugate visited State University Hospital. They toured the hospital with Alex Larsen, Haitian Minister of Health, and visited the maternity ward. The hospital is the largest in Haiti and is fully operational – Norwegian physicians, the Canadian Red Cross, Mt. Sinai Hospital staff and Stanford University medical staff are also operating out of the hospital.
