Administrator Smith to Deliver Remarks at American University of Afghanistan Event

WASHINGTON, D.C. - This Friday, June 10, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Gayle Smith will accept the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) International Award for Public Service at the University's Tenth Anniversary Celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, and the United Nations, and U.S. Army General (Retired) John Campbell, former Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, will also accept awards.
 
AUAF is the only co-educational private university in Afghanistan. It currently has over 2,000 students enrolled, 32 percent of whom are women. USAID played the leading role inthe establishment of AUAF and has contributed more than $100 million over the past decade.Recently, USAID committed to support a dormitory to directly address afundamental barrier forwomen seeking to attend AUAF - the lack of secure housing for female students.
