USAID contributes to the renovation of the Foroshgah Shopping Center, damaged in a terrorist attack
BEFORE On January 18, 2010, the Taliban launched attacks on buildings throughout Kabul, including government buildings and the Foroshgah-Bozorg Shopping Center. The five-story shopping center sustained the most damage in the attack.

The Foroshgah-Bozorg Shopping Center was the first mall of its kind in Afghanistan and a symbol of the country’s future. After it was damaged in a Taliban attack, USAID worked with the Afghan Government to rebuild the center and to help individual shopkeepers recover their businesses.
Through its Afghanistan Small and Medium Enterprise Development project, USAID contributed nearly $600,000 to finance a portion of the renovation costs and to help shopkeepers with their immediate loss of income and for repairing and restocking their shops. U.S. forces in Afghanistan and the mall’s owner provided the additional $450,000 needed to complete the repairs. This joint effort successfully restored the shopping center, benefitting Kabul and the country’s overall economic growth.
