FIGHTING
EVERY MINUTE COUNTS
THE PROBLEM
We’re in the fourth quarter in the fight against malaria. Since 2000, with smart solutions like bednets, more than six million people have survived the world’s oldest and deadliest disease. But, in this life-saving battle, we’re not just racing against the clock, we’re racing to save lives. Too many children will never make it to the fourth quarter of a basketball game, the fourth grade at school or even their fourth birthday, if we don’t all join together to act. The clock is ticking. A child dies of malaria every two minutes. That’s 840 children — and their futures — taken each day.
WE HAVE MADE PROGRESS
Our progress in the past ten years has been thanks in large part to the President’s Malaria Initiative. As the world’s leading donor in global health, the United States is strongly committed to working with our partners to free people from the intolerable burden of malaria. No child should die of a mosquito bite.
HOW WE PREVENT & TREAT MALARIA
TIMELY DIAGNOSIS
Rapid-diagnostic tests are
expanding the world’s ability to
confirm malaria cases in remote
settings, ensuring that people
get the right treatment when and
where they need it.
TREATMENT
Artemisinin-based combination
therapies are the first-line
treatment for malaria. A full
course of life-saving malaria
treatment can cure a child in one
to three days.
MOSQUITO NETS
Long-lasting insecticide treated
bed nets prevent malaria by
creating a protective barrier against
mosquitoes at night, when most
transmissions occur, and one net
can protect two people.
PROTECT EXPECTING MOTHERS
During pregnancy, common problems include maternal anemia, miscarriage, prematurity, stillbirth, and low birthweight in newborns. Provision of an antimalarial drug monthly prevents malaria during pregnancy.
WE CAN END MALARIA BY 2040
In his 2016 State of the Union address, President Obama challenged us to end malaria for good. These existing tools are simple and scalable - a mosquito net can protect a mother and child for three years; a rapid diagnostic test and inexpensive medicines can save a child’s life. With the right investments, we know we can end malaria in a generation, save 11 million lives and unlock $2 trillion in economic benefits.
