Marsa Matrouh – Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Sherry F. Carlin distributed sewing machines and household water well certificates to families affected by landmines in the Northwest Coast area.

“We express our gratitude to the hundreds who have worked in hazardous conditions to clear these mines - and to save lives.  We are honored to contribute to families deeply affected by landmines by helping provide the tools they need to regain their economic footing,” said Mission Director Carlin.

In partnership with the Government of Egypt (GOE), the United Nations Development Program, and the European Union, USAID and other donors support the GOE’s efforts to address mine action and mine clearance, and to reintegrate mine victims into society as productive members of the economy.  Since 2007, USAID has supported these efforts.

Supporting mine action is a collective effort to enhance safety and economic opportunities in this area. These activities are part of a comprehensive package of assistance from the American people that promotes job creation and economic development. Since 1978, the United States Government through USAID has invested nearly $30 billion in Egypt.
